I would love to do Tips for Tots every Tuesday, but am finding it difficult to keep up the pace, hopefully those of you with interest will keep checking and I hope to do them at least two times a month, maybe more as need arises, such as today...
As we prepare for our Day Care family to start up again in August there are changes to be made. With an infant and a one year old coming alongside my two year old I need more nap space. I hope to get Seth into a "big boy bed" so I can then use his crib upstairs for Tate which opens up the Pack N Play to put in our room for baby Claire. Key problem - how to transition to the bed for Seth.
At my parents place Seth has slept relatively well in a twin bed and we expect him to do just fine in the one we will pick up next week. The question is do we just make the change, talk about it, leave the crib in place with the bed also in place for a short time, and what will happen now that he can get out of his bed at his own will, do I need to get locks on all the doors, and.... These are all the millions of questions/worries running through my head.
Also, bedding is an issue in my mind. Seth has a Classic Pooh themed room and I really do not plan to change that. (We hope a baby #2 will someday occupy the same space and enjoy the lovely decorated nursery.) That said, I have been unable to find a twin size quilt that I like to match the theme. And does a two year old really sleep under a twin-size comforter anyway? At my parents he sleeps on top of the sheets with his favorite blanket - no quilt. Could it be that easy at home too?
So what tips do I have today? None! What tips do you have? I hope plenty!
Here's what I need to know: How do you transition out of the crib? and What paraphernalia do you really need to make it happen?

We transitioned in an hour because a friend called and said she had a free bed to drop off at our house! That went fine for us. I think I was more excited than Ellie because I could finally lie down with her to read to her at night. We'd already transitioned to a crib/toddler bed by taking one side off the crib, so that might have helped.
We have a hook and eye lock on Ellie's door that we use during really ugly tantrums, but that's it for locks. I don't think you need anything else. If Seth doesn't use a comforter, why try to make him? Good luck!
The Library has a bunch of books for kids on 'big kid beds' Ayden and I read them and then I ask him if he wants a big boy bed. We haven't made the switch yet but it will happen soon. I figure the sooner we talk about it the easier it will go.
