Tips for Tots Tuesday: Potty Training

We are officially in day two of potty training. It took Dad getting him in big boy pants, but I can take that is stride. (Really, I spent all last week trying to get to that point and all it took Dad was one morning. Wow!) In fact the more involved Jason gets the better it goes. Men have this patience with determination factor that women just don't always have. He tells Seth the way it's going to be in a loving but all business fashion and more often then not, done deal!

Today we have had a lot of laundry to do as Seth is still trying to figure out when he needs to go as apposed to mom asking him all the time. I think today we will try to just sit on the potty every hour and see what happens. If it means less messes great. The most important thing to me is that HE ends up potty trained, not me. For example, if the only reason he sits on the potty to go is because I ask him then I am really the one who is trained. Where as if Seth feels the need to go and runs in the bathroom by himself, HE is the one who is truly trained. The whole purpose here is to build confidence and set the stage for a lifetime of making it to the bathroom in time. Oh and don't forget good hygiene, hand washing is a must!

That's my take thus far but there are some things I need to know. Can you help me?

1. How do you handle a public restroom? (We are teaching Seth to sit and those BIG toilets might be kind of scary...)

2. How many pairs of underwear does one kid logically need?! (We are using the Gerber training pants for now as they have a little extra protection built right in and are really soft cotton too.)

3. What other products/things have you found handy? A particular book to read to your child, treats, stickers, prizes (or other downright bribery), a way to protect your car seat, high fiber or salty foods to induce production, etc.?

4. How do you pack your "diaper bag" now that you don't use diapers?

5. What do you do for nap and bed time? I am told that night training takes place later and plan to use diapers for night but what about during nap time?

So that sums up my thoughts from today and where we are so far in this crazy, scary thing called Potty Training. I need your answers and your help wherever you can assist! Please leave a comment so I can learn more... Thanks!

Next Week: Fun in the Sun. Let's chat about how you keep your kids safe out in the sun. Sunscreen, sun hats, swim wear, you name it. We all need it!

Good Luck! When you have Seth all potty trained I'll send Ayden over.

Have fuuuuun. Don't expect anything too fast. That's my biggest piece of advice. After the first dry day, I was like "YAY! no more diapers! No more accidents!!" But I had been turning my ear deaf to the little words regression, nighttime accidents (both my girls still have nighttime accidents some). corene had a pretty major daytime accident regression there about 6 months after she trained. So, biggest word. Patience. :)

1. Public restrooms. I try to avoid them at that age. I have no tricks.

2. we've had 15-20 pairs probably at that age, once they're out of trainers.

3. no tricks. Corene trained Ava. I did nothing. That was my trick with her. ha.

4.I'm not much of a diaper bag person, but always wish I was when that accident happens... so I guess a change of clothes would be a good idea. But I NEVER have that when i need it. Never.

5. We did pullups for a loooooonnnng time at night and nap. Naptime was a big accident time for Ava. Until just recently.
The gerber trainers don't hold enough for a nighttime accident. Leaks right through.

Thus ends the longest comment evah.

Allie potty-trained too easy--that is, once she was actually ready. I think I tried about 3 times to no avail. 4th time was the charm for her. She still has accidents (actually she had one during naptime today), but they are rare. I agree with Jenny--don't expect too much too soon.

1. Public Restrooms: I have this nifty fold-up toilet seat adapter for kids that can fit easily in a diaper bag. I still use that occasionally for Allie when we are out and about. I got it at Babies R Us.
2. 15-20 pairs of underwear, at least. You can get by with less if you don't mind doing laundry every other day.
3. We have a book for Allie that she read for about 6 months while sitting in the bathroom on the potty before she trained. It was about a little girl teaching her teddy bear how to use the potty. Allie also 'taught' her bedtime bear to use the potty. It also had stickers, which worked for a while. But, then, I resorted to M&M's, which worked the absolute best.
4. Diaper bag for Allie: 1 pull-up, 2 pairs of underwear, 1 shirt, 2 pairs of bottoms, and an extra pair of socks if she isn't wearing sandals.
5. We use pull ups for bedtime. Allie has stayed dry during naps from the very beginning (honestly, today was her first naptime accident since before we potty trained). I'm thinking we may move to underwear at nighttime because she never wets the pull up--we use it over and over and over...

Good luck!!

Ours did go very quickly, but Jackson is older too.
1. We just dove right into using the public toilet. He actually did better at first with the public seat because it is a little more narrow at the end than ours at home.
2. we have about 20 pairs and that seems to be good. I can keep my normal laundry schedule.
3. We did M&M's every time, even if he just tried to go- it helped with the resistance to me telling him it was time to go. We also had a sticker chart (I just printed it from nickjr.com). He got one sticker for going potty and two for going poop. When he filled the chart all up he got a toy that he had been really wanting.
4. I carry two pairs of underwear, a pull-up, wipes, pair and pants and shirt. I also keep a little roll of bags to put wet clothes in, the same ones I used when he was a infant.
4. We do pull-ups at night, and he doesn't nap. The boy that I watch did plastic pants during nap. That worked great, but I think it only works if they don't tend to have big accidents at nap.
We do have an Elmo potty video too, if you like Elmo at your house you are more than welcome to borrow it.
That's about it- just lots and lots of patience. Good luck!
