I love storage totes! They keep things in their place which is something every mom needs more of. I purchased some various sized Rubbermaid Revelations storage totes, they are still too difficult for my son to open on his own so I can retain some sense of control over toys with small parts. As you can see in the picture I purchased a long flat version, an under the bed type and a small rectangle. We filled the flat one with dry beans (cheap at Super Target) and then my son uses them as rocks to push around with his diggers and skid loaders, which fill the smaller tote.
This is hours of fun for our son! He even wears his "work hat" from time to time, though of course I couldn't get him to pose for me today. Some other things you could try...potato flakes, rice, sand, small gravel, super snow (Lakeshore Learning), or something similar and a few small toys such as a shovel, cup and spoon.
You are certainly wondering about the mess. We started out by placing the storage bin in the middle of a blanket where spills could be easily dumped back in. Now Seth knows that if he spills (on purpose, accidents happen) the bin gets closed up for another day and thus he is very careful. It has worked wonders over the winter months and rainy days too. I certainly hope you will give it a try!
I thought maybe we could come together on this one. I am not so web savvy as to set up a Mr. Linky, but we all know how to leave a comment, so let's do it that way for now. What's a toy that you have, more or less invented, for your kids? Leave a comment so we can all gets some new ideas for both indoors or outdoors!
Next Week: What inexpensive things have you saved (cardboard boxes, bottles, etc.) that have become favorite toys or activities for your kids?

We made puppets. We traced cookie cutter shapes for the 'heads' and then glued the 'heads' on straws (I didn't have any popsicle sticks, so straws were substitued) and voila--instant puppets for little hands. Allie loved decorating the puppets with stickers, colors, ribbons, etc... and she spent even longer making up her own puppet shows. Now, since she is in a new princess make believe stage, the puppets have transformed into magic wands :)
BLankets are huge around here. They make great forts or tents. And sometimes Ayden will sit on one side and then we will grab the other side for a blanket ride.
